Perimenopause is the transitional phase leading up to menopause, typically beginning in a woman's 40s but sometimes earlier. During this period, oestrogen and progesterone levels fluctuate unpredictably, causing a wide range of physical and cognitive symptoms. It can last anywhere from two to twelve years before menopause is reached, defined as twelve consecutive months without a menstrual period.
Perimenopause is highly individual. On average it lasts four to eight years, but the range extends from as few as two years to as many as twelve.
